WORKSHOP & PROTOTYPE MANAGER

What you will do

This role reports to the Head of Product Development in our R&D function and is responsible for managing our workshop activities.  Take a hands-on approach and lead the team to work in close collaboration with cross functional engineering and product teams to support the design and development of prototypes and components for our complex medical devices using state of the art machinery.

  • Take a hands-on role leading and performing day-to-day workshop activities
  • Manage and support the workshop team
  • Provide prototyping services using tool room equipment and rapid prototyping machines
  • Build prototypes, fixtures and equipment
  • Support and advise engineering teams in specifying parts to suit the available machines
  • Work with external manufacturing vendors to develop prototype and production solutions
  • Develop prototyping and manufacturing methodologies to improve in-house capabilities
  • Assist with the development of design guidelines to support R&D with concept development

What you will bring

We are seeking an experienced workshop manager with a background as a machinist or toolmaker who thrives on leading from the front in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.  Bring your in-depth technical knowledge, customer-centric approach, and passion for delivering high quality service to support the development of diverse projects across multidisciplinary teams.

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience as a machinist or toolmaker and managing workshop teams
  • Cert III Fitter/Machinist or trade qualifications in the use of mechanical workshop equipment
  • Demonstrated experience in organisational leadership, stakeholder management, project definition, and collaboration
  • Experienced in 3 & 5 Axis CNC machine programming, operating and setting skills and conventional machining skills to fine tolerances
  • Ability to read, interpret and produce detailed components from engineering drawings and 3D Cad with an understanding of tolerances
  • Proficiency with mechanical workshop equipment and techniques
  • Strong technical background in defining Design for Manufacture based component designs that are scalable across multiple products
  • Ability to manage workshop job throughput via workflow management systems i.e. Jira
